"Ecological Surveys of Southern Michigan"

Jesse states: “My experience surveying state lands over the past 8 seasons has been transformative. I have surveyed over 100,000 acres during that time and that work has allowed me to develop a rich appreciation for public lands and a unique perspective regarding their importance for regional biodiversity. I will take you on a tour of some of these areas and describe how the work has influenced my thinking. I have concerns about the future and the wellbeing of some of these special places and my hope is that you will leave with a new appreciation for the public lands in our region”.

Jesse was born and raised in West Michigan and I currently reside in Grand Rapids. I am a graduate of Grand Valley State University where I studied the interactions of tree of heaven and legumes. I have been working as an ecologist for MNFI since 2010 and have conducted vegetation surveys across state lands throughout southern Michigan.

The Native Plant Society for Michigan and the Great Lakes Region

The Michigan Botanical Club is the native plant society for Michigan. We are also home of the Michigan Big Tree Program.

The club was founded in 1941 and consists of five chapters.

The focus of the Michigan Botanical Club is:

Conservation of all native plants.

Education of the public to appreciate and preserve plant life.

Sponsorship of research and publication on plant life.

Sponsorship of legislation to promote preservation of Michigan native flora.

Establishment of suitable sanctuaries and natural areas.

Cooperation in programs concerned with the use and conservation of all natural resources and scenic features.
