Ann Fraser, a Professor of Biology at Kalamazoo College. She received her B.S. in biology from Acadia University in Nova Scotia, Canada and her Ph.D. in biology from Harvard University where her dissertation focused on the evolutionary ecology of lycaenid buttefly-ant mutualisms. Dr. Fraser undertook postdoctoral training in insect chemical ecology at the University of Arizona Her interest in native bees was sparked by the diversity of bees she noticed in her students’ insect collections for her entomology course. From there she began cataloguing bee species in areas of southwest Michigan and engaging students in research on plant-pollinator interactions. She will describe some of the work they have done in recent years, with a focus on a pollinator habitat enhancement project she is directing along the powerline right-of-way at the college’s Lillian Anderson Arboretum. This past summer was spent cataloguing the flora and bee fauna at the site prior to habitat enhancement, and documenting diversity of stem-nesting bees and other insects that colonized artificial nests they placed at the site. She will use this information to assess the impacts of the enhancement project on local diversity..
