Plants That Bite Back:

A peek into the life of carnivorous plants, a heritage-rich snack and an exciting community-shared project right here in Kalamazoo

Dr. Love will provide a brief overview of the evolution of carnivorous plants and what makes them carnivorous and then share the history and functionality of a traditional rice snack cooked in Nepenthes pitchers, one of the most iconic and recognizable plants in the rapidly growing economic environment of Southeast Asia.  She will also introduce upcoming plans to hold exciting community-shared biodiversity inventory events in the downtown of Kalamazoo.

 

Dr. Rachel Love grew up in Michigan and has a PhD from Leiden University. Her work in ecology and evolution has been published in the journal Nature and featured in National Geographic and on the BBC.  She currently holds a position as the Director of Science, Math, Business and Economics Learning Centers at Kalamazoo College.

 

All indoor programs are at the People’s Church, 1758 N 10th St, Kalamazoo, 49009.  Socializing begins at 6:30 pm and the programs begin at 7:00 pm.  Non-members are always welcome to join us for programs and field trips.  Masks are recommended but not required in the church.
